If you find standing water on the side of your house, it’s a sign that there’s trouble on the horizon – and it’s something you should address right away.

Why Standing Water on the Side of Your House is Dangerous

Standing water on the side of your house can seep into small cracks in your foundation or basement walls. That can lead to water damage, mold growth, and worse.

What to Do About Standing Water on the Side of Your House

If you see standing water on any side of your house, it’s important that you address the issue immediately – otherwise, you could end up having to make expensive repairs. A little bit of prevention goes a long way in this case!

Your options include:

  • Re-grading your yard
  • Fixing or reinstalling gutters
  • Adding swales

Re-Grading Your Yard

Most yards need about a 2 percent grade away from the foundation. That way, enough water will travel away from the house and prevent damage to the foundation or basement. Typically, grading is done during construction – but sometimes, it’s done improperly or the grade wears down over time.

Fixing or Reinstalling Gutters

Rainwater and other moisture that runs off your roof can pool next to the foundation, even if your yard is properly graded. If that’s the case, you can do a simple fix: Buy downspout extensions that carry the runoff at least 5 feet away from your foundation.

Adding Swales

If your yard grading is within 6 inches of your siding, you probably can’t raise its grade any further. In that case, you may need to hire a contractor to create swales (they’re like shallow ditches) that divert water away from your home.
