In Michigan, most tornadoes occur in April, May, June and July. Statistically, they’re more likely to happen between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m., but we’re all familiar with Michigan weather – anything goes. Check out these tornado safety tips to make sure you and your family are protected as best you can be if one hits near you.

Tornado Safety Tips

The truth is that no place is actually safe from tornadoes – even if you’ve heard rumors that places near lakes, rivers or hills are safe.

Safety in a House

Your basement (and under sturdy furniture) is the best place to go for safety during a tornado. If you don’t have a basement, get to the center of the house on the lowest floor. Go to a small room (like a closet or bathroom) that doesn’t have any windows.

Safety in a Mobile Home

If you live in a mobile home and you have heard a warning that a tornado is imminent, get out and take shelter elsewhere. If you don’t have warning, leave the trailer and lie flat in a ditch or ravine. Put your arms over your head to protect it.

Warning: Do NOT take shelter under a mobile home.

Safety While Driving

If you’re driving and a tornado is imminent, get out of the vehicle and get into a ditch or ravine. Protect your head with your arms, and lie flat.

Warning: Do NOT get under your vehicle.

Safety at Work or in School

Your workplace or school will have safety protocols in place to deal with tornadoes. Usually, they involve going into an interior hallway or small rooms on the lowest floor. Always avoid areas with large windows or wide, freespan roofs.

Safety Out in the Open

If you’re out in the open and a tornado is coming, lie down in a ditch or ravine, or the lowest spot in the ground that you can find. Hold something on the ground if you can. Do not try to take shelter in damaged buildings – they can collapse on you.
