If you’re like many Michiganders, you’re dreading spring rains – but they’re definitely on their way. It’s time to start thinking about the impact rain can have on your home – and what happens when your basement gets wet.
Here are three ways to prevent a wet basement this spring.
How to Prevent a Wet Basement This Spring
- Add gutter extensions
- Plug gaps
- Restore the crown of soil around your house
Here’s a closer look at each.
#1. Add gutter extensions
Your downspouts may be dumping water too close to your home. They’re supposed to push water at least 5 feet away, but if they’re not, you can add gutter extensions. Made from metal or plastic, these extensions are a temporary solution. You can use them until you’re able to add a permanent, underground drain pipe.
#2. Plug gaps
If you notice that water is getting into your basement through cracks or gaps around your pipes, you can block them yourself with hydraulic cement or polyurethane caulk. However, if water is coming up through the floor, you have a different problem – and you’ll most likely need to call a professional for help.
#3. Restore the crown of soil around your house
Surface water is supposed to drain away from your foundation, and to do that, there should be a 6-inch-high slope of soil that comes out from your house in all directions. But over time, that soil settles. You can build it back up yourself or you can hire a professional.
