Our first snow might be right around the corner, and that means you have to have an emergency plan in place in case you get snowed in.
First things first: Stay inside. Don’t go outside when there’s a winter storm advisory unless there’s an absolute emergency.
From there, follow these five tips for making it through a winter storm safely.
5 Tips for Making it Through a Winter Storm Safely
Close Off Rooms You’re Not Using
You’ll save on heating costs if you close off the rooms you’re not using. Shut the heat vents and, if the doors are drafty, fold towels to block the wind.
Close Blinds and Curtains
Winds can get pretty high during Michigan’s winter storms, so close the blinds and curtains. This serves two purposes: First, if the windows break, the blinds or curtains will keep the glass from spraying into your home. Second, they help seal in heat.
Drink Plenty of Water
Aim for water and other non-caffeinated beverages to prevent dehydration. A lot of times, cold air is very dry – and staying hydrated can help you stay healthy.
Wear Loose-Fitting, Lightweight Clothing You Can Layer
In case the power goes out, you want to be wearing loose-fitting, comfortable clothes you can layer to keep warm.
Make Sure You Have Proper Ventilation
If you’re using heat from a fireplace or woodstove, make sure there’s proper ventilation in your home. If you have a gas furnace, you’ll need to check that it’s not blocked by a snowdrift – and if you have an upstairs gas furnace that vents on the roof, you might have to shut it off until the snow melts.
