3 Ways to Protect Your Home From Falling Trees and Branches

Severe storms bring torrential rains and strong winds that can down trees and cause branches to snap. Snow and ice can weigh down tree limbs and test dead branches beneath their heavy weight. All of these conditions can endanger your home. Here are three ways you can help protect your property from falling trees and branches.

Examine and Trim Long Branches

Long limbs that grow near your home can become especially hazardous during inclement weather. If you can safely and easily reach these branches you should trim them back to reduce their length.

Inspect Trees After Storms

After any weather events that involve heavy winds, snow, or ice you should check trees on your property for damage. Keep your eyes open for broken branches and debris. If you find a branch that’s damaged you should remove it, if you can do so safely. For large-sized branches that have been damaged, or branches that you have to climb a ladder to reach, you should contact a professional since you could get hurt or further damage the tree.

Monitor the Health of Your Trees

When it comes to tree damage and falling branches there are no good or bad species, and any tree that isn’t healthy can become a problem. So, along with looking for dead and broken branches, you should monitor your trees for signs of disease like mold or leaves dropping out of season. Also check for infestations, like large numbers of crawling or flying insects, and bugs that chew on a tree’s leaves or trunk. Some issues, like damage to a tree’s root system, are not visible and you may opt to have an arborist inspect your trees (perhaps once a year in late spring) to check for this problem, among others.
