4 Home Fireworks Safety Tips to Remember This Fourth of July

With many fireworks shows and parades being canceled or rescheduled across Michigan this year, and some replaced with virtual events, more and more families are deciding to host their own fireworks displays. With that comes an increased emphasis on fireworks safety.

In 2018 fireworks accounted for approximately 19,500 fires—including 1,900 structure fires and 17,100 outside fires, according to the National Fire Protection Association.

Here are four fireworks safety tips to help you and your family have a safe and happy Fourth of July.

Never Point Fireworks at Structures

You should never point your fireworks directly at other people or at pets. The same goes for buildings, structures, and cars.

Keep a Fire Extinguisher Handy

Use a fire extinguisher to swiftly put out any accidental fires. Your extinguisher should be a dry-chemical extinguisher with a Class B and C or multi-purpose rating. When using it follow the PASS procedure, which is: Pull the pin; Aim at the base of the fire; Squeeze the trigger (slowly); Sweep the nozzle from side to side. The majority of portable extinguishers can reach from 6 to 10 feet and last from 8 to 10 seconds.

Maintain a Safe Distance

View your fireworks at least 25 feet away from where they are being launched. A ringing or buzzing in your ears is an indication that you’re sitting or standing too close. Members of your family over 7 years old may benefit from earplugs. For smaller children and babies, child-sized earmuffs can reduce dangerous noise levels.

Use Protective Eyewear

If you plan to handle fireworks yourself always use protective eyewear. In the event that you suffer an eye injury seek medical attention immediately. Don’t rub, rinse, or apply pressure to your eyes. Do not apply any ointments or attempt to remove any objects that may have become lodged in your eyes.
